Story by Bill Knight, El Paso Times A new basketball season with a new head coach with an almost completely new team will tip off the 2018-19 basketball season against UT-Permian Basin Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Don Haskins Center. Rodney Terry, the 19th basketball coach in Miner history, will send out his first team Tuesday. Only three Miners return from last season — senior forward Paul Thomas and sophomore guards Evan Gilyard and Kobe Magee. “Anytime you walk in a new season, there is always a level of excitement,” Terry said. “We’ve had a ton of practices and we’ve worked really hard at this point for the opener. We’ve got a young team. And we still have to value taking care of the basketball.” Terry is coming from being the head coach at Fresno State the past seven seasons. The native of Angleton, Texas, had four 20-win seasons in his last five years at Fresno. The Miners had a pair of game-like scrimmages — losing 100-74 to Grand Canyon in Phoenix and then 85-61 to Texas Tech in Lubbock. “I thought we did a much better job in the second game with unforced turnovers,” Terry said. “I thought our guys competed at a really high level. Hopefully, we are a team that comes in every night and competes at a really high level. You do that in practice and it becomes a habit.” read more at
